Geography Key Stage 1 and 2
Aims:
- Geography is about the study of places, the human and physical processes which shape them, and the people who live in them. Geography helps us to understand the ways of life and cultures of people in other places.
- A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
KS1
- Develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality.
- Understand basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography.
- Begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.
KS2
- Extend knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.
- Develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

Year1- 2 – KS1

Where do I live? This unit explores the town, country and continent children live in. They will find out where the United Kingdom is located on a world map and explore the features of the countries and capital cities of the UK, before finding out about their local area. |

Year 3-4 – KS2
|
Our European Neighbours Through this unit children will take a trip across the English Channel and discover the continent of Europe. The class will discover some fascinating facts about Europe and also find out the names, locations and features of European countries and capitals. |

Year 5-6 – KS2
|
Countries of the world The class will learn to identify and locate the seven continents and some of the countries within each one, exploring areas of human and physical geography around the world, from population and culture to mountains and rivers. |

Year 1-2 – KS1

Around the world A whistle-stop tour of the seven continents of the world. The unit follows Buddy the Bee as he visits a country on each continent and explores their features, people and landmarks. The class will learn where the seven continents are on a map and undertake a variety of fun activities to help them learn more about each one. |

Year 3-4 – KS2

Earning a living This unit will help children understand how people in the UK and the rest of the world earn a living in a variety of ways. The class will explore various jobs in various sectors, before investigating industries around the world and looking at why some adults don’t work and some children do. |

Year 5-6 – KS2
|
Extreme Earth This unit explores the wilder side of the world and the Earth’s extremes, from raging tropical storms to violent erupting volcanoes to terrifying towering tsunamis. The unit also explores how these extremes affect people, communities and landscapes. |
